OLD POSTAL SYSTEM

Mongolia can pride itself on developing one of the world's first long-distance internal postal systems. During the time of Chinggis Khan, a "pony-express" postal service, know as urton, would cover over 100 km per day. Bells where attached to the saddle to warn locals of an approaching rider. The rider was quickly fed and the horses changed before he went on his way. All male herdsmen were required to work for several weks a year to ensure the continuing success of urton. The postal system was steadlily improved over the centuries, and continued until 1949.
