TO CHINGGIS HOME TOWN
THE GREAT KHAN
Chinggis Khan is still alive! His ubiquitous face adorns bottles of Chinggis Khan vodka and many currency notes, and one of the most expensive hotel in Ulan Bator is named after him. A renewed nationalism has resulted in a reverence for history's best known Mongolian.Chinggis Khan was born in 1162 (although the excat date is open to debate) and called Temujin. He was proclamed Chinggis Khan or "universal king" in 1189. Within a few years, he managed to unite warring Mongol tribes, gather a loyal army and create the largest empire the world has ever seen. Chinggis died in 1227 from enjuries sustained after falling of his horse. The site of his grave has still not been found, although it is believed to be somewhere in the Khentii montains. According to legend, the 2000 people or so people who attended Chinggis'funeral were killed by 600 soldiers, who were in turn slaughtered themselves - so total secrecy was ensured.
