Tsaatan Tribe

Meeting with the Reindeer People

MEET TSAATAN

On the northern edge of Mongolia, near the Russian border, lives a people whose traditions and customs are among the most ancestral:the Tsaatan. Unlike the Mongolian nomads here it is the reindeer that is the favorite animal. The Tsaatans also preferred the teepee to the yurt. Thanks to reindeer herding, the approximately two hundred Tsaatan who remained nomadic continue to live in the mountains and taïga north of Lake Khösgöl, close to Siberia. Reindeers provide the tribe with all its basic needs - milk, transportation, meat, skins and bones and antlers used as building materials and for tools.
Those who have become sedentary live in the village of Tsagaan-nuur, the last Mongolian village before the wild lands. Their territory is accessible only by horse and the confort is very rudimentary.

Best months for Tsatan: end of June to mild August
